Abstract

The essay aims to shed light on the person of Germano Proverbio, a classical scholar, who gave great impetus to the teaching of Latin. He was an important representative of the “Turin school” and created a new way of studying classical languages. After recalling his academic education and the first steps of his career in Rome, the paper focuses on Proverbio’s research, in particular during his academic years in Turin, where he arrived in 1974-1975. Indeed, if we analyze the course programs and his books, we seize his role as an innovator, he rejected in fact any grammatical approach to the text. In his regard, the teaching of literature means active reading, in order to understand its cultural reference framework, which implies neglecting neither lexical nor narratological aspects. So Proverbio really engaged the teachers at school, which became a learning community, as teachers and students accept the joint educational challenge.
